How to Respond to a Ford Recall

If you receive notice of a Ford recall, you should contact our Ford service center to have the underlying issue remedied. It's easy to panic when you get a recall notice in the mail, but you should resist that temptation and take action instead. What actions should you take? The team at Blaise Alexander Ford of Mansfield has prepared a list of them.

Review the Recall Notice

As you look through the new Ford vehicles on our lot, it can be hard to imagine any of them ever being recalled. While it doesn't happen often, even the Ford team must issue a recall notice once in a while. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration requires automakers to distribute recall notices if the NHTSA or a carmaker determines that a given car or its equipment poses a safety risk or fails to satisfy established safety standards.

After the need for a recall has been established, a carmaker has 60 days to notify registered owners and purchasers of affected automobiles of the recall by first-class mail. If you receive a recall notice, review the document to learn how to get the problem fixed and how long you have to schedule the necessary repairs. When you review the notice, you'll see that the required repairs will be performed at no charge to you.

Stop Driving

Depending on the reason why a recall was issued, you may want to stop driving. Automakers issue recalls for all sorts of reasons, such as airbags that don't deploy properly, wiring issues that are fire hazards, slipping transmissions, and collapsing car jacks. Even a car seat may require a recall. If the problem will compromise your car's ability to operate safely and keep you and others safe on the road, don't drive until the issue behind the recall is resolved.

Make a Ford Service Appointment

While you might want to visit our Ford parts center to fix the underlying problem yourself, you should refrain from doing so. Repairs made as the result of a recall are best left in the hands of our factory-trained, certified technicians. Scheduling an appointment for professional service is a smart move to ensure the problem is fixed the right way for free.
